Top Locations For Technical Diving

Technical diving allows divers to explore parts of the ocean that are unreachable for normal scuba divers. It allows divers to use different types of equipment in order to stay underwater longer, or even to reach depths that would be life-threatening with normal scuba gear. Technical diving can provide adventurous divers with new experiences, and it can reveal to them the hidden secrets at the bottom of the ocean.

Certain dive sites are ideal for technical diving, and in fact can only be enjoyed fully by someone who has the additional expertise and abilities of a technical diver.

Khao Lak in Thailand, for example, is a popular location for divers. Technical divers who visit this location will find that there are many interesting places for them to explore, including underwater caves and shipwrecks. There are also some deep dive sites that can only be properly experienced by a qualified technical diver, near the islands of Surin and Similan. One particularly interesting site for technical divers in Khao Lak is the sunken village that was left at the bottom of the reservoir created in 1980 by the Ratchaprapha Dam. The village now sits at a depth of 60 meters underwater, and is one of the most unique technical diving experiences in the world.

Malta, and the nearby islands of Comino and Gozo are another perfect choice for the technical diver. There is a lot to see in this area even without the additional reach that can be provided by technical diving, and there are many normal scuba divers who enjoy visiting this location. Technical divers who come to Malta, Comino and Gozo will find that there are plenty of extra challenges awaiting them. There are many reefs, caverns, caves and wrecks from many different eras to explore, but the most famous and exciting diving site in the area is the Blue Hole.

Blue Holes occur in many parts of the world. They are naturally occurring circular, steep sided sinkholes or caves in which the water appears a darker blue than in the surrounding ocean. The Malta blue hole is a particularly good example of this phenomenon, although technical divers will find other blue holes elsewhere, particularly in Belize and the Bahamas, although the deepest is Zacaton in Mexico that reaches a maximum depth of 335 meters.

The Malta blue hole is in the Inland Sea at Gozo. Technical divers who enter from the Inland Sea pass under a rock arch as they enter and swim alongside a reef that reaches up from the sixty meter deep sea floor. There is a cavern in the reef wall and beyond this is the blue hole itself, a sinkhole through which divers can return to the surface. It is also possible to perform the dive in reverse, beginning at the sinkhole.

The most exciting thing about technical diving is that there is still so much to discover. The technology is all fairly new and there are few divers who are actually trained to use it. This means that many sites are still completely unexplored, and new dive sites that are perfect for technical diving are always being found.
